Transformation: Changing Your Ways

Transformation: Changing Your Ways

I’ve heard it said the definition of insanity is doing the same things you’ve always done and expecting different results.

If you consistently have a problem getting things done, maybe it’s time to stop and re-evaluate.

A couple weeks ago, I shared how I revamped my routine to make my Friday nights more restful. You can read about it in my post, Making Life Easier:  Adapting and Rethinking.

Do You Have This Problem?

Another thing I did to de-stress my life was change the way I kept my fridge. Now, it may sound crazy to you, but I was having a real struggle keeping my fridge cleaned out of moldy science experiments. I did not seem to have any room for the foods I was bringing home from my pick-up orders.

I would open the door and feel the shelves mocking me: “You call yourself a homemaker but look at the food you waste. For shame!”

I tried. I really did. For a while, I made Friday nights my “clean out the fridge night.” Of course, Friday was also my grocery shopping day, so it was easier to balance all my containers on top of one another so I could shove in the new food packages and slam the door. “I’ll work on it tomorrow.” Somehow tomorrow always had new challenges.

Then I watched a Minimal Mom video, and she demonstrated her food storage system in the fridge with clear bins. It looked doable so I tried it.

The basic premise is that anytime the food cannot be contained in the bin you have designated, it must go. Either cook it or get rid of it.

I cannot explain it; but somehow it worked!

Old way of doing things:

New way of doing things:

See that second shelf? Leftovers can only fit in that bin!

Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something New

If your system is no longer working for you, try changing it up. We grow and adapt as we mature. Maybe our systems need to change, too.

These are physical examples of making things work better for us. Would you say it is possible that spiritual practices might need to change as well?

For example, since I’m an early-bird person, I felt there was no need to try doing devotions at night. I wouldn’t get anything out of it. My brain had shut down for the day.

It’s certainly true no bible study could be done when I’m half awake; but I have found listening to scripture as I drift off to sleep so comforting. And in the morning, I could recall enough of a verse that spoke to me to look it up and dive in further.

I’m wanting to develop the habit of spiritual journaling. I was trying to do it before I left for work in the mornings; but it’s not working out. Instead of forgetting about journaling altogether; I’m open to doing it differently. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get this habit established?

The Pattern for Real Change: Let God’s Word Transform You

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

ROMANS 12:2 NLT

Hey! I’m on a journey. I don’t pretend I’m doing all this perfectly. I’m sharing the goals and dreams I have in my heart in this series, “A Rich and Satisfying Life.”  This is my twenty-fourth post of examining a life free from the clutter of both wrong thoughts, attitudes, expectations, and too-full calendars, as well as physical clutter. You can click here to see all the links to the series.

This series is part of a Write28Days challenge sponsored by Anita Ojeda. The challenge is now over, but I am still working at the goal of writing 28 times on my subject.
