I love the imagery of being like a tree so deeply rooted it can withstand the fiercest of storms. Psalm 1 describes a tree firmly planted.
Deep Rooted
The question is, how do I get those deep roots? The Bible uses the analogy of a tree planted close to the river’s edge. It’s easy for it to get nourishment being so close to the water. Such a tree is going to thrive and grow and prosper.
Water is often used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. What is one of the Holy Spirit’s functions? The Holy Spirit helps call to your remembrance the Word of God.
Going back to Psalm 1, I believe we find the answer.
Meditating on Light
I believe the fruitful, blessed, prosperous person is the one passionate to know more about Jesus. He learns more by searching the scriptures. Meditating on what God reveals in His word is like food and drink to him.
I want to be that person!
Be a Bible Enthusiast
Hello! I’m Jerralea; and I’m a bible enthusiast, which means I’ve made my whole goal in life to be even more deeply rooted in growing in knowledge about Jesus.
What about you?
This post was written in response to the prompt “Root,” provided by the community at Five Minute Friday. We free write for 5 minutes on the week’s prompt and then share.
In the interest of full disclosure, I wrote my post in 5 minutes; but the headings, scriptures and graphics took longer.

I make sure my roots are nourished;
on this I must be clear,
that they’ve most often flourished
by being soaked in beer.
It’s not that I’m a drunkard,
still less am I a lush,
but I won’t be leaning toward
beating ’round the bush,
’cause I have fatal cancer,
and won’t take an opioid,
so the best-case answer
is that beer helps me avoid
the awful pain I daily meet,
and stays the pukes so I can eat.
thank you, Andrew! Praying you will be nourished in all ways.
I love the visual of a tree planted by the water, Jerralea, and I believe like you, deep roots come from deep meditation in God’s Word!
Donna, there is a hunger in me to drink more and more of the Word. Thanks for stopping by!
Jerralea, I notice as I grow older, I desire to have my roots go even deeper into Scripture. Wonderful post!
Tree roots, yes, anchored, nourished and watered to grow deeper each passing year.
I want to be that person too – and the more I dig deep into God’s Word, the more I love it!
