Jesus came on a mission.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
Luke 4:18-19
because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor;
he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,
to preach deliverance to the captives,
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty them that are bruised,
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
He came to do His Father’s work and His goal was to pass the work along on to His followers.
“As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”
John 17:18
In fact, He will empower us to do everything He has done – and to do it even greater!
“Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me;
John 14:11-13
or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing,
and they will do even greater things than these,
because I am going to the Father.
And I will do whatever you ask in my name,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
God has not called a stop to the mission. Both He and Jesus are still working.
“… Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
John 5:17
Jesus work is at the right hand of God, interceding for the saints.
“…Christ Jesus who died—
Romans 8:34
more than that, who was raised to life—
is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”
Now is the time
It’s time for us to take up His mission. Now is the acceptable year of the Lord. Now, God wants to continue His ministry through us.
One of my former co-workers (who is Finnish) would sometimes stop to talk. After a little bit, he would say, “Well, I must continue.” Off he would go down the hall, muttering to himself, “Yes I must continue the work.”
I remembered that phrase when considering this being the acceptable time to continue the work. We must be about the Father’s business: preaching, healing, delivering, and setting the captives free.
When I originally wrote this in 2020, I imagined someone saying, “Well, here we are, in the midst of a pandemic. We are encouraged to stay home, stay socially distant, and not even touch someone! How can I be the hands and feet of Jesus? How can I continue the work?”
Our God is a wonderfully creative God. The pandemic did NOT take Him by surprise. I believe He still has something each and every one of us can do to advance the kingdom, whether circumstances have us in lock-down mode, or not.
Perhaps you can bring a word of encouragement to someone via a phone call, email, or text message. Hey! A card sent snail mail is a special blessing. You took the time to actually write on a card or letter, put a stamp on it and mail it. How special!
Be like Jesus. Intercede for someone. Taking the time and using your passion to lift someone’s name before the Lord is a rare gift. You’d be modeling Christ. We’ve already mentioned interceding is what Jesus does for us.
We must continue the work. Time is getting shorter. We are closer to the Lord’s coming than we were yesterday. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be caught doing nothing.
